Scope & content
File consists of photographs of Lester Pawis (1937-April 29, 1999), a favourite photographic subject of Ivaan Kotulsky, taken on several different occasions. Mr. Pawis was a native Canadian who spent a lot of time on the streets in the Queen Street West and Bathurst Street area. Most of the photographs were taken at or near 588 Queen Street West, at the north-west corner of Queen Street West and Bathurst Street, when it was occupied by a branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, when it was an empty building, and after it became home to The Meeting Place, a program of St. Christopher House. In many of the photographs, Mr. Pawis is posing alone, while in others he is posing with one or more other people. In some of the photographs, he is posing outsuide the Stephen Bulger Gallery, 700 Queen Street West. In others, he's posing in front of the Bovine Sex Club, 542 Queen Street West. In two, he is striking an ironic pose in relation to the store logo in the window of Red Indian Art Deco, 536 Queen Street West. In some photographs he is posing in front of graffiti covered walls and doors. In one set of images, he is posing with a bottle of Listerine, a smile on his face, while in others, he is seen sharing a bottle of alcohol with friends. In some photographs, Mr. Pawis appears inebriated, but in others, he is posing in a sardonic interplay with the photographer, and in many he is posing quite seriously for his portrait.
