Scope & content
Fonds consists of letters, albums, newspaper clippings, photographs, and film collected and maintained by Stanley Davies pertaining to the Irish Regiment of Canada and other related military units. These records constitute a collection of private and military records, chronologically arranged by the donor. The collection of military records consist of textual administrative records that contain regimental orders, battle honours and awards, war diaries, dress regulations and training and drill exercises. There are also pamphlets and publications created by the Irish Regiment of Canada Veterans' Association for special events, memorials and the Green Bonnet, a newsletter that contained information regarding board members, news and events related to the Irish Regiment of Canada. Other material includes scrapbooks that contain some annotated photographs and press clippings mainly documenting the activities of the officers during World War II. There is also a collection of correspondence and photographs relating to the activities of the Irish Regiment, the 110th battalion and the 180th battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as well as the Canadian Machine Gun Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles and the Queen’s York Rangers. These records date from the formation of the Irish Regiment in 1915 to the 1960s. Many of these records are personal letters or notes from individual soldiers. These are mixed with some official correspondence between officers of the regiment and government officials in Ottawa. Later records in this collection consist of pamphlets documenting 75th reunions and other gatherings. In addition to the textual material, there are both portrait and group photographs. Many of the photographs were donated to the collection by various officers and some of the photographs housed in albums are also identified. The majority of photographs are not annotated and include panoramas of officers in various locations, usually Toronto. Also included are a collection of films, mainly documenting parades, summer camp training and scenes in various locations including Holland and Italy.
