Scope & content
Fonds consists of the textual and photographic records created, used and maintained by the Alumnae Association, School of Nursing, Toronto General Hospital. This includes the full range of the association's high-level administrative records, such as: constitutions and bylaws, minutes to meetings, financial records, annual reports, committee reports and executive correspondence. Dating back to its founding year in 1894, these records substantiate all of the Alumnae's activities over the course of their existence, the major ones being: forming a Sick Benefit Fund for School of Nursing graduates; advancing the nursing profession in Canada by helping form the Graduate Nurses' Association of Ontario (GNAO) and the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses (CNATN); establishing trust funds, bursaries and scholarships to encourage women into further education in health-related areas; publishing directories and newsletters; organizing social events, such as anniversary dinners, reunions and fundraisers; and maintaining an archives to preserve the memory of the School and its graduates. In addition to keeping the administrative records of the Alumnae, the archives actively collected a wide range of textual records, photographs, published works and artefacts from or about the Toronto General Hospital, the School of Nursing, its educators and graduates. Over the years, since 1929, the archives of the Alumnae pulled together a comprehensive record of the School's entire 83-year history, from 1881 to 1974. Among the collected material within this fonds are: yearbooks; diplomas; certificates; course lectures and instructional material; school notebooks; invitations; event programs; scrapbooks; published articles; biographies and histories; and much more. There are also records that were donated to the Alumnae by former Superintendent of Nurses/Directors of the School of Nursing, including Mary Agnes Snively (1884-1909), Jean I. Gunn (1913-1941) and Mary Elizabeth MacFarland (1942-1960), as well as many of the School's graduates, including Margaret Helena Kellough (1926), Isabol Nichol Allan (1926) and Margaret Isabel Green Oke (1935). This fonds also includes the published material of the Alumnae Association, such as membership directories, histories, and the full run of their newsletter, The Quarterly (1935-2008). There are approximately 1,700 photographs in this fonds. While the subjects of these photographic records mainly consist of School of Nursing class pictures and those of individual graduates, there are also photographs of superintendents; directors; Toronto General Hospital staff and events; interior and exterior views of Toronto General Hospital buildings; the nurses' residence; Alumnae members at various reunions, teas, and anniversary celebrations; gifts and contributions made by the Alumnae; members who served overseas as Nursing Sisters in WWI and WWII; royal visits; and conventions and meetings at other nursing associations, including the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses (CNATN), and the International Council of Nurses (ICN). Together, these records constitute very detailed evidence of the personal and professional lives of those many women who were educated by and/or worked for Toronto's largest hospital.
