- Scope & content
- Series consists of images taken by photographer Peter MacCallum to document the demolition of the Gardiner Expressway and the reconstruction of Lake Shore Boulevard East, east of the Don River. MacCallum began photographing this area in 1997 and therefore the series includes images of the eastern portion of the Gardiner before demolition began. On June 9, 1999 Council adopted Clause 4, Report No. 8 of the Urban Environment and Development Committee which recommended the commencement of the F.G. Gardiner Expressway East Dismantling Project. This project had been endorsed by the former Metro Council and City Council in December, 1996, just prior to amalgamation. The existing elevated structure had deteriorated to the point that it required significant capital expenditure for reconstruction. Given the cost, and the low volume of traffic on this portion of the expressway, many on council advocated using the money to demolish it and replace it with an improved ground level roadway, Lake Shore Boulevard East. Works and Emergency Services contracted the photo documentation of this project to Peter MacCallum.Photographs of this series document in detail the various types of work, the workers, and the machinery required to carry out this major engineering task. The images predominantly focus on the breaking up of the existing elevated expressway and the building of new on and off ramps to connect the expressway with the east and west bound lanes of the Lake Shore. They reflect a close examination of construction materials, equipment and the demolition process. The photographs also document the second stage of the project, the reconstruction of Lake Shore Boulevard East and the rail corridor. As a result these images assist in understanding the transformation of this neighbourhood from a rather neglected heavy industrial area to a thriving Film District occupied by large production studios. The photographer organized the images by producing a negative file data sheet for each sheet of negatives. As well, a contact sheet was produced for each sheet of negatives. They are arranged in chronological order.
