Scope & content
Fonds consists of the photographs and associated records produced by the Toronto based commercial photography firm, Gilbert A. Milne & Co. Ltd. Milne's business was primarily concerned with producing press and publicity photographs. He had many long-standing clients, including the C.B.C., the Bank of Nova Scotia, Labatt's, and Salada-Shirriff-Horsey. Fonds includes many studio photographs of products and packaging to be used for advertising purposes. The company also covered trade shows held at venues such as Exhibition Place, including the National Home Show, and business meetings, and conventions. Milne also took photographs for various law firms showing accident scenes and injuries. In addition to doing work for regular clients, Milne rarely missed documenting major events and activities in Toronto. He captured the Grey Cup, Warrior's Day, and Santa Claus parades; the Royal Winter Fair; and famous visitors to the city, such as Bob Hope. He took pictures of Canadian prime ministers, Ontario premiers, and Toronto mayors. Fonds also consists of an incredibly rich variety of photographs of street scenes, working people, small businesses, sports, theatre, and building interiors and exteriors.
