- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of photographs which document aspects of the Toronto International Summer Sculpture Symposium, which was held in High Park in 1967. The symposium, which was initiated and organized as a centennial project by Canadian sculptor Gerald Gladstone, (with financial assistance from municipal, provincial, and federal governments), was a significant public art event in Toronto's history. It was intended to be an opportunity "for the citizens of Toronto to observe and become involved in the creative process of twelve sculptoral forms by artists from various parts of North America and Europe." Artists were provided with their required materials, room and board, and an honorarium for their sculptures, which were created in High Park and became the property of the City of Toronto. Of the 12 artists who participated in the symposium, only 10 completed their projects. These photographs by Arnaud Maggs document the 10 artists and their works in various stages of progress, providing an important visual record of this public art event. A number of these pictures were published as part of an article in The Star Weekly, March 23, 1968. The participating artists and the title of their sculptures were: Wessel Couzijn, Holland, "Midsummer Night's Dream"; Hubert Dalwood, U.K., "The Temple"; Mark Di Suvero, United States, "No Shoes"; Frank Gallo, United States, "Relief of Man Behind a Desk"; Menashe Kadishman, Israel, "Three Discs"; William Koochin, Canada, "The Hippy"; Pauta, Canada, "Polar Bear"; Bernard Schottlander, United Kingdom, "November Pyramid"; Jason Sealy, United States, "Hubcap Columns"; Armand Vaillancourt, Canada, "Druid Temple".
