Scope & content
Series consists of a selection of seventy black and white photographic prints from Peter MacCallum's Yonge Street Project portfolio, a set of architectural streetscapes documenting the downtown section of Yonge Street over a six-year period, from 2006 to 2011. The Yonge Street Project is a contemporary portrait of Toronto's main street. Photographs show perspective and elevation views of buildings along the commercial stretch of Yonge Street, and document its jumbled mix of architectural styles from periods dating back to the mid-Victorian era, along with the variety of signage and billboards that overlay many of its edifices. Several built landmarks on Yonge Street are represented in this set of prints, such as the Dineen Building, the Lumsden Building, the Ryrie Building, the Hudson Bay Department Store (formerly Simpson's), the Church of Scientology Building, Dundas Square and the Toronto Eaton Centre, as well as long-established Toronto businesses like Syd Silver Formals, the Zanzibar Tavern, the Roberts Gallery and the House of Lords. Prints also include sets of four perspective shots of Massey Hall on Victoria Street, and four of the Sam the Record Man store at different stages of demolition. As the Yonge Street Project coincided with a number of major redevelopment initiatives along Yonge Street, MacCallum's photographs capture the changes to the street as shown in shots of the massive condominium construction projects at One Bloor and at College Park. The Yonge Street Project was a self-directed project that MacCallum conceived after being exposed to the streetscapes of Paris during a four-month Canada Council residency in Paris. After several years, MacCallum returned to Paris and completed a series of streetscape photographs of Rue du Faubourg-Saint Denis in 2010. In the meantime, he began documenting the commercial architecture along Yonge Street in downtown Toronto, carefully building up a portfolio of 226 black and white streetscape photographs of Yonge Street between 2006 and 2011. This series is made up of a selection of 70 prints from this portfolio. The Yonge Street Project is ordered geographically into three sections, following the linear, southward path of Yonge Street from Bloor Street down to College Street (Items 1-24); College Street to Dundas Street, including Dundas Square and the Toronto Eaton Centre (Items 25-45); and Dundas Square to King Street (Items 46-70). Photographs from this portfolio were featured in Canadian Architect in 2008, Spacing Magazine in 2010, exhibited at the Image Works Gallery in 2010, and at the Eric Arthur Gallery during the CONTACT Photography Festival in 2012.
