Scope & content
Series consists of negatives produced by Lou and Nat Turofsky, Roy Mitchell, and Hal Crellin while assosiated with the Toronto based commercial photography firm, Alexandra Studios. The photographs were commissioned by a diverse clientele, including Maple Leaf Gardens, Canadian National Exhibition, Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, City of Toronto, Toronto Transit Commission, Royal Alex Theatre, Wood Gundy, and the Ontario Motor League. There are photographs of schools, churches, hotels, medical facilities, and monuments; as well as commercial, financial, and municipal buildings. There are also photographs of sporting events, and informal and formal photographs of prominent local and visiting personalities including Prime Minister R. B. Bennett opening the CNE in 1932, Gene Autry entertaining kids at the Hospital for Sick Children on College Street in 1958, General Dwight D. Eisenhower at City Hall in 1946, Saskatchewan Premier Thomas C. (Tommy) Douglas with Roy Rogers in 1955, Mayor Nathan Phillips in his office with comic Joe E. Brown in 1956, John George Diefenbaker, Jack Dempsey, Bob Hope, Lloyd George, Lord Tweedsmuir (aka John Buchan), and Canadian sports mogul Jack Kent Cooke. Princess Margaret's 1958 Royal Visit and Queen Elizabeth's 1959 Royal Visit are also well documented. Other photographs include the Police Games, Miss Toronto contestants (in bathing suits), Miss War Worker contestants (in coveralls), wartime operations at the John Inglis Co. Ltd. (including the "100,000th Bren Gun Ceremony"), and nearly a thousand pictures taken at Maple Leaf Gardens showing non-hockey events such as the Ice Capades, Metropolitan Opera, War Events, Political Rallies, and the Circus. The series also contains photographs of the exterior and interior of the various Alexandra Studio buildings and a number of photographs which appeared in Ted Reeves' book about the Turofksy brothers, Sports Seen, including the classic shot of the Turofsky brothers setting off from Toronto in their automobile to cover the infamous 1919 World Series in Chicago, and Lou Turofsky's personal favourite, the "Sleeping Newsboy".
