Scope & content
Fonds consists of photographs which were taken by photographers associated with the Alexandra Studio between about 1875 and 1979. These photographers include Lou and Nat Turofsky, Roy Mitchell, and the 19th century photographer Josiah Bruce (who took a number of CNE views). The images provide valuable documentation of Toronto’s built environment, prominent personalities, local and visiting politicians, and an array of public events including Royal Visits, political rallies, beauty contests, sporting events, and the CNE. The negatives in this fonds represent only a portion of the work of the Alexandra Studio, the Turofsky brothers, and Roy Mitchell, since major portions of the studios' work was acquired by the National Photography Collection, the National Archives of Canada, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Sports Hall of Fame, and the CNE Archives.
