Scope & content
Series consists of 95 photographs by Peake & Whittingham, and two photographs by James & Sons which document the construction of Toronto’s landmark Union Station on Front Street West, between Bay and York streets. There are also nine photographs showing railway bridges in an unidentified city; one photograph of three intersecting rail lines in an unidentified city; a photograph titled, "Bay Street from the Foy Building;" a photograph of a section of the railway lands; and a photograph of the first floor plan of Union Station. The construction photographs of Union Station were taken between 1915 and 1919, and the earliest pictures show the site before the construction of the structure began. Other photographs document the steel framing and the block/brick work as the construction progressed and the building took form over a three-year period (1916-1919). There are also pictures of the interior of the building showing various areas and subjects including the main hall, a men’s public washroom, ceiling details, flooring, scaffolding, windows, and skylights. Union Station has been the busiest railway station in Canada since it opened in 1927, and today it is a terminal for inter-city trains, commuter trains, subway trains, and buses. The building is a designated National Historic Site of Canada, and is protected by a Heritage Easement Agreement between Parks Canada and the City of Toronto.
