Scope & content
Fonds consists of 2,993 negatives, and some corresponding prints, most of which were taken by Earnest Edgar Strathy Smith and his colleagues at Canada Pictures Ltd. The majority of the images in this fonds document the development of the Yonge Street Subway, from the letting of the contract on July 7, 1949, to 1955 after the project was complete and crowds of people were using the transit system. The images provide views of downtown streets and traffic, the excavation of Yonge Street, the building of the decking at street level, the construction of the stations, and the construction of the underground tunnels and station platforms. They document the workers; the rolling stock; and the heavy equipment required for a project of this scale. There are also photographs of the tours of the subway which were arranged for visiting journalists and dignitaries, and photographs documenting the official opening of the subway on March 30, 1954. The remaining images in the fonds consist of views of Toronto’s built environment in the 1940s and 50s, and a group of images that Smith copied from an unconfirmed source, which document Toronto in the first half of the 1890s. The fonds also contains original prints produced by Smith of most of the latter two groups of negatives, some of which are in albums. The original arrangement of all images (generally chronological and by project number) has been maintained.
