- Scope & content
- Item consists of a photograph that was previously identified as the St. Clair Carhouse. However, these new Peter Witt cars were delivered by CN to York Station yard (at Danforth and Main streets) from builders CC&F, Ottawa Car and Canadian Brill-Preston Works, from the fall of 1921 to 1923, long before Hillcrest was completed and deliveries by rail (CPR) could be made there. It is believed that a local CN switcher picked up the flats with new Witts and brought them to TTC's Hanson Yard (ex-TCR) on Coxwell Ave., where there must have been a siding as deliveries of concrete aggregate, granite setts, streetcar rail etc, were received by steam railway. (Hanson became less important after Hillcrest Way Yard was operational ca. 1924). Danforth carhouse was just a few hundred metres north on Coxwell Ave. and the TCR trackage had wide devil strip which would permit Witts to be operated or towed north. To reach distant St. Clair Division would have required passage over extensive stretches of older TRC track with narrow devil strip.
