- What the image shows
- This is a printed page from a book or publication, showing a black-and-white studio portrait of a man in a dark clerical coat with a high white collar, a cross on a cord at his chest, and a piped vestment, against a plain backdrop. The bold caption beneath the portrait gives a name and title, and below it is a block of small printed text in two columns describing the subject's career in the church. The page is marked along the bottom edge with a credit line naming the Archives de la Ville de Montréal.Described automatically by a vision model; may contain mistakes.

- RIGHT REV. EMILE JOSEPH LEGAL, O.M.I., D.D.,Bishop of Pogla and Coadjutor-Bishop of St. Albert, N. W. Ty.The Right Rev. Emile J. Legal, D.D., was born at St.-Jean du Boiseau, diocese of Nantes (France), October 9th, 1849. After finishing his classical course, which was pursued with brilliant success, he was made Bachelor of Arts, and after his ordination, which took place on June 27th, 1874, he became Professor of higher Mathematics. He entered the Novitiate of the Oblate Fathers at Nancy in 1879, but soon after he was expelled with his brethren from his quiet retreat by the French government, and took refuge in the Novitiate of Our Lady of Angels in the diocese of Montreal, Canada, where he made his profession, September 20th, 1880. After his profession, Father Legal was sent to the missions of St. Albert, N.W.Ty., where his lot fell among the "Bloods", a tribe of "Black Feet Indians", the wildest of all our Indians. Father Legal displayed among these savages such zeal, capacity, tact and perseverance, that his superiors proclaimed him "Dignissimus" to become the Coadjutor of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Grandin, with right of future succession.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
