- What the image shows
- A dark-toned halftone reproduction of a formal oil portrait of a man with powdered white hair, wearing a dark military-style coat with light-coloured lapels, cuffs and buttons and a white cravat at the neck. He is shown in head and shoulders against a plain dark background. Below the picture is a printed caption in italics reading Sir Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester, followed by a block of printed text quoting a magazine-style article about the colonial governor, so the image is a printed page clipping rather than a photograph of a scene.Described automatically by a vision model; may contain mistakes.

- Sir Guy Carleton, Lord Dorchester"A man who would never admit that he had done wrong." England sent him out to deal with the troublesome colony in 1766, after the dramatic recall of Governor Murray. Carleton has seemed to dominate the history of Canada for the next thirty years, during most of which he was gov-ernor of the colony, and he has been worshipped as one of the greatest proconsuls of the British Empire. But now it appears that the idol had feet of clay. The portrait is from a replica in the Public Archives of Canada of the original portrait in oils left by Dorchester in Quebec, later removed to Rideau Hall, and since blurred."A man who would never admit that he had done wrong."
