- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of the records of the Toronto Housing Authority and its financing arm, the Limited Dividend Housing Corporation Limited. The records document the Housing Authority and its activities as Toronto's social housing agency. The records primarily relate to the purchase and redevelopment of the neighbourhood now known as Regent Park. Regent Park was Toronto's first large scale neighbourhood improvement project designed to provide low rent public housing. With the success of Regent Park many other social housing projects, such as Moss Park, Alexandra Park, and Don Mount Village were completed by the Housing Authority and are documented as well. The minutes, correspondence and financial records of the the Housing Authority and Limited Dividend Company trace the decision making, program administration and fiscal accountability for this agency. The complications of amassing some 69 acres of land in a developed neighbourhood are detailed in the property acquisition files. The Housing Authority's photographs convey their message of progress and improvement. The photographs establish the initial sub-standard living conditions in the Regent Park neighbourhood and the construction of the new housing units and apartment buildings. The newspaper clippings give an insight into public and press reaction to the project.
