BERNARD FIGLER, sometime lecturer in the Département des Études Juives at the Université de Montréal, is a life-long student of Jewish affairs. The events that followed and the situation today make fascinating reading for the student of history. Lawyers in particular will be drawn to read or re-read the Hirsch case (1928 A.C.,200), a judgment of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and particularly the comments of the Lord Chancellor. His biographies of prominent members of the Jewish Community are essentially historical studies, conveying the rich flavour of the people and their times. The present work is the fruit of Mr.Figler's careful scholarship and research over the years. He has, of course, consulted the usual sources in English, French and Yiddish; all have their own particular interest, but there is a special interest in the French material found in the National Archives of Quebec, concerning the Jews under the French regime and the early years thereafter. Many surprises come to light as a result of his painstaking research. Not the least of these is the conclusion the Mr.Figler draws from early legislation in the field of education.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
