Scope & content
White ridged border. Portrait of Michael Kutz as a young man. He is wearing a shirt with open collar. Subject is looking to his right with his shoulders and head slightly turned to the right. This photograph was taken while Michael Kutz was involved in partisan activities. Narrative: Michael Kutz is a Holocaust survivor who fought with the partisans during the war and later immigrated to Canada as a war orphan. He was born on 1930-11-21 inNieswiez, Poland (now Belarus). After the German invasion, Jews were forced into an informal ghetto. On the night of 1941-10-29 all of the city's Jews were summoned to leave their houses and to go to the central market place. They were marched to three large pits outside the city, where they were ordered to climb in and were shot. Kutz was left for dead in the pit but survived and had to push his way through the dead bodies to get out. He was aided by nuns and sheltered by a farmer for a winter before he joined a partisan group made up of Poles, Jews and former Russian officers. At 12, he was the youngest member of the partisan forces, but he worked with the resistance for two years, helping to blow up bridges, trains, and oil reservoirs. After the war, Kutz learned that he was one of only 12 people to survive the mass killings, out of 8,000 Jews who had once lived in his village. He decided to leave Europe and travelled by foot to Genova, Italy, where he was selected as a war orphan to come to Canada. He eventually settled in Montreal.
