Scope & content
2 pages, single sided. Stapled in the upper left corner. Letter testifies to the qualification and character of Szigmundt Zilberbogen. Narrative: The Zilberbogen were a Jewish family originally from Warsaw (Poland). Mother Chana and daughters Elzbieta (born 1933) and Celinka (born 1937) moved to Belgium in 1939. The father, Szygmundt, an engineer, stayed in Poland. During the Second World War, the mother and daughters were first sent to Brens camp and then to Rivesaltes camp in the South of France before being released. Chana was then hospitalized and spent the war hidden in a Sanatorium in Mazamet from 1940 to 1947. Elzbieta and Celinka were hidden in various locations in the South of France, including a farm and different children's homes run by OSE. Szygmundt was killed in Poland. Chana and her daughters went back to live in Belgium after Liberation until immigrating to Canada in 1951.

TESTIMONYCivil Status of the Witness:Name and Surename:Date and Place of Birth:Profession:Residence:Degree of Relationship: Not related in any respect.Deposition:- 2 -in favour of Mrs. Chana ZILBERBOGEN and her daughters Elisabeth and Cécile, domizilled at present at Montreal,Canada, 4635 Van Horne, Apt. 36l.Before the second world war my parents owned the building Zelazna ul.42 in Warszaw/Poland. They lived in the third floor of this building and I was with them for a long time, later on I visited there frequently. The family Zilberbogen (Silberbogen) had their residence in the same house. Therefore, I am in the position to make an exact statement regarding the social standard of family Zilberbogen. They belonged to the richest and most distinguished circle in the former Warszaw. The parents of Mr.Zilberbogen had already been very respected and rich people who were able to send their three sons to the university; Norbert studied dental medicin and was then a very well known dentist in Warszaw and Hermann became a Doctor of Pharmacy. The late husband of Mrs. Chana Zilberbogen, Dipl.-Ing.Szymon Zilberbogen, had graduated from the Technische Hochschule in Berlin, where he acquired the title: Diplom-Ingenieur. I recall precisely that his title: Diplom-Ingenieur was shown on the building Zelazna ul.42, in front of his offices and on all his business forms. In Poland it was just as impossible as in Germany and any other country to assume a title for which the qualifications had not been obtained. An engineer with training in Germany was especially esteemed in the former-2-Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
