- Scope & content
- 32 pages, missing cover. Reichsadler on cover page, top centre and in centre of circular stamps on page 2. Numbered 85216. German passport issued to Felix Guido Schlittner in Vienna on February 3, 1939. Red 'J' stamped on cover indicated that the subject was Jewish. Small b&w photo of subject on page 2, affixed with metal grommet. Page 3 contains a physical description of subject and lists his occupation as merchant. Stamped with exit visa from Shanghai Consulate in Vienna, March 30, 1939; two stamps on April 12, 1939: one allowing him to take luggage with him and another allowing him to take money with him. All three stamps on a page that was not scanned. On back cover, stamps indicate that subject passed through Italy and Switzerland in mid-April 1939 on the way to Shanghai. Narrative: Felix Guido Schlittner was the husband of the donor, Sima Schlittner. A Viennese Jew, he fled the Third Reich and sought refuge in Shanghai, China. As an international settlement until 1941, Shanghai was an open city without immigration restrictions and the only place in the world that did not require an entry visa. As such, approximately 18 000 Jews from Germany, Austria and Poland sought refuge there in the 1930s and early 1940s.
