Report from CanadaEXPO 67 — MONTREAL1867 1967Pavilion of JudaismThe Story of IsraelAbove: The Israeli PavilionLeft: The Pavilion of Judaism22Pioneer WomanMarch 1967Among the many marvels of the towering structures of Expo 67, the Universal and International exhibition which will take place in Montreal from April 28-October 27, 1967, two will be of special interest to the many thousands of Jewish visitors, the Pavilion of Judaism and the Israeli Pavilion. Both will reflect the wonder of Jewish survival and the meaning of Judaism to "Man and His World." The Pavilion of Judaism is a contribution of the Jewish communities in Canada. The Foundation of Judaism, Montreal, is responsible for its creation and operation.Rectangular in shape, the outside walls are decorated with quotations in English, French, Hebrew and Yiddish. An adjoining landscaped garden features works of Canadian sculptors. In front of the Pavilion stands "The Procession" an outstanding work by Elbert Weinberg, consisting of a group of life-size figures in bronze carrying the Torah."Man and His World" in the light of Judaism as an evolving religious civilization and a philosophy of life, is the theme of the Pavilion. Its entire display is based on the visualization of the five principles of Judaism, Torah — Avodah — Gemilat Chasodim — Emet — Shalom, illustrated through films, works of Jewish thought and creativity, masterpieces of art including some by Chagall and Lifshitz, graphic representation and photographs, ceremonial objects, Torah scrolls, rare manuscript and historic documents of Canadian and Hebrew incunabula. An exciting authentic hand-crafted model of the Temple in Jerusalem, illustrates our people during biblical times. A series of live presentation on "Men of Thought and Creativity" and "Leaders of Men," will feature outstanding personalities of international stature. Great liturgical music will be heard in the chapel. There will be daily services with special Sabbath and Festival events. The Pavilion will serve as a truly international meeting place. The Israeli Pavilion tells a dramatic story in its 27,000 square feet of exhibition space. Surrounded by a landscaped biblical garden it depicts graphically the history of the Jews from antiquity to the present. The architecture and exhibits express the dynamic rebirth of the nation. The archaeological artifacts, centered around a Dead Sea Scroll, show the country as the cradle of the Jewish nation while monumental figures on the wall express the longing for the return to Zion. A sombre room reminding the visitor of the destruction of European Jewry, stands in sharp contrast to the bright hall depicting the joy of the establishment of the State and the ingathering of the exiles.Around a symbolic structure are grouped exhibits tracing Israel's progress towards self-sufficiency, its search for water and natural resources, the development of agriculture and industry. The struggle to build a state based on social justice and cultural integration through the revival of Hebrew as a living language is the theme of another section. It will portray our youth as the heirs of a rich tradition which blends the world of the Bible with the science and technology of today. The ideology of the early Pioneers as exemplified by the Kibbutz is shown as a continuation of the prophetic tradition of the Bible. Another area will illustrate how these ideals are being imparted to new and developing countries. A luminous wall bearing a quotation from Isaiah will symbolize Israel's fervent desire for peace.Displays of Israeli goods, arts and crafts; presentation of films and performances of dance and song ensembles; restaurants and snack bars featuring Israeli delicacies, will convey the feeling of being in present day Israel. Both Pavilions will cooperate in joint programming. July 6th is Pioneer Women's Day at Expo. We hope to welcome many haverot from the United States and Canada to celebrate it with us.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
