COPY OF ARTICLE "AFTER FORTY-FIVE YEARS"by RAPHAEL de SOLA Dec. 1968until October 28th this year, after an absence of forty-five years.I left Montreal in 1923 and have never returned to my native cityFrom my early youth I attended the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue"Shearith Israel", then situated on Stanley St., in the very centreof Montreal.I attended all services, morning, afternoon and evening, and, althoughweek day services were not held regularly, I attended these whenever theywere held. Therefore, I am in a position to comment on any differencebetween the service as it was up to 1923 and the service held to-day.I sang in the choir for three years and was Barmitzvah in the StanleySt. building of the synagogue. My father was Parnass from 1904 untilhis death in 1920, my grandfather was minister of the synagogue andwas succeeded by my uncle, who composed many synagogue tunes still sungin the Shearith Israel to-day.I attended the new synagogue building on Lemieux St for the first timeon Friday night, October 30th, this year. The new building is large andthe main synagogue very modern. Friday night service, however, was heldin the "little synagogue" which is quite large from London standards andis as large as many synagogues I have been to. The ark is that which wasin the old Stanley St. building and which, before Stanley St. was built, was in the previous building on Chenneville St.In my youth the average Friday night attendance was about fifteen andoften less. It was only by paying four "minyan men" that we were assuredof always having a Friday night minyan. This time there were at leastnearly a hundred men and some women. As service was at half past fourin time. I feel that my grandfather, uncle and father would have beendelighted to see such a large Friday night attendance. Such an attendanceon an ordinary Shabbat eve was undreamt of in their day.Amzalek, the two Hazanim, sat on the tebah. All wore black gowns withblack silk caps of a curious eight sided shape which were about threequarters of a foot high. They did not wear bands. The shammas, Mr.Pesach, wore a similar cap witha black lounge suit.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
