Solicitor General of CanadaSolliciteur général du CanadaThe Honourable Elmer MacKayL'honorable Elmer MacKayMAR 21 1985Mr. Murray Levine5581 Glencrest AvenueCôte St. Luc, QuebecH4V 2L8Dear Mr. Levine:Yours sincerely,Elmer MacKay, P.C., M.P.AttachmentOttawa, CanadaK1A 0P8CanadaSoliciteur général du CanadaThank you for your letter of December 6, 1984, regarding the issue of war criminals who may be living in Canada. This Government is deeply concerned about the possibility that persons responsible for war crimes related to the activities of Nazi Germany during World War II may be resident in Canada. The Government, therefore, will adopt all necessary measures in order to ensure that any such war criminals are brought to justice. To fully investigate this matter and to recommend any further action required to ensure that any war criminals in Canada are made to answer for their crimes, the Government recently established a Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals. This Commission, headed by the Honourable Mr. Justice Jules Deschênes of the Superior Court of Quebec, is to report its findings on December 31, 1985. The terms of reference for the Commission and a news release issued by my colleague, the Minister of Justice, are attached for your information. In establishing this Commission of Inquiry, the Government did not intend that it should replace or otherwise impede ongoing investigations being conducted by the RCMP. The RCMP will continue these investigations using all the resources necessary for the purpose.I trust that this letter addresses your concerns satisfactorily.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
