- The Bank of Territorial Development of China Ltd.33 NANKING ROAD; CABLE ADDRESS "TERREDEBANK"HEAD OFFICE: PEKING.TELEPHONE NO. 3892Shanghai, China, 5th July 1917Rabbi Meldola de Sola35 Mackegor StreetMontreal, CanadaMy Dear Rabbi de Sola,—CABLE ADDRESS "TERRDEBANK"TELEPHONE No. 389335 Mackay StreetThe Jewish ChronicleI have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your highly interesting and welcome letter dated 31st May last, and beg to thank you for its contents.I need hardly say that I made good use of it as you will undoubtedly notice from the newspaper clipping attached herewith. I trust that whenever in future you resume your lectures on Bible criticism, you will kindly remember me by sending a copy of the paper wherein they were published. I would very much like to see some more energy and enthusiasm shown by our Orthodox clergy in disseminating the ideals of Judaism, and I think this can no where be better done than through the weekly Jewish Press. It is unfortunate that the Press today in America is mainly in the hands of our reform co-religionists, and this tendency to leave the journalistic field entirely in their hands is to be deplored. It is somewhat unfortunate that the stress of your work leaves you no time to propagate the doctrines of our time honoured faith and thereby mould the ideas of the present and rising generation of our people throughout the world. I think the time must soon come when we should do away with the present laissez faire policy and endeavour to institute some reform in this direction.By the way, do you know who is the next candidate for the Presidency of the New York Jewish Theological Seminary? So far no one has been elected although Dr. Cyrus Adler was appointed as a temporary President. I think to my mind Dr. Mueschler of the London Jews' College is an excellent choice. With kindest regards and best wishes.I remain,Sincerely yours,Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
