LEADING LADIES OF THE UNITED NATIONS 41Bodil BegtrupDenmarkEleanor RooseveltMRS. BEGTRUP, a graduate of the University of Copenhagen, was chairman of the United Nations Assembly's sub-commission on the status of women, and author of a resolution urging member states of the UN to adopt measures for the political equality of women. She has served as chairman of the Danish Women's National Council and began her diplomatic career as a member of her country's delegation to the 1938 Assembly of the League of Nations. Although the women of Denmark enjoy legal equality with men, few of them are active in political life.MRS. ROOSEVELT'S courage, industry and expert knowledge of world affairs command the respect of her fellow delegates. In January she was elected Chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Commission by acclamation. It was largely because of her insistence that the International Refugee Organization came into being. During debates on equal rights for women she called for "more action" rather than "more words." Quote: "The United Nations is the voice of the world, and women must be part of it."Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
