- C15994, F/Lt. Monty Berger, RCAF Overseas, England.29th Jan., 1944.Dear Ponyites,"You Are My Sunshine". And so you are.....The date must always be a key-stone for us.In the turmoil of the present, it is too easy tolose the flavour of the past and the perspectiveof the future. In two long years now I have beenfully with the present and determination made inthe past about things to come is almost lost sightof. But this date, in all its fulness, hearks meback to mood and resolve of yesteryear. Joe'scheerful, fighting spirit to some degree areindelibly wound up in my make-up now, and whilethe "fighting" spirit involves less risk to me--atthe moment--I like to feel that a certain firmnessand quality acquired from Joe are being passed onand having their effect as he would want it.I might muse a little whimsically as I write.I sit here in staid and sober fashion, peering throughmy glasses, and feeling very much older than Ireally am. I should be observing the occasion intrue Ponyite fashion, in hell-hooting through townin old-time style. But no, there is a certain fitting-ness about this. A serious job is to be done beforeI do any hell-hooting again and at the moment I findmyself seriously engaged for many hours every dayneither now nor, more particularly, in the verynear future. And so it heartens me to think backand grasp a bit of "sunshine". A fellow officer isworking by my side and is singing appropriatelyPercy, you are disappointed that we did not doa play on Joe as yet. In a sense I am, too. But theto get across still stands, more indelibly clearthan ever. It shines as a beacon light and cannotfail and its value as a guide does not lessen for, alas, the gloom about is jjust as thick as ever andRead automatically; may contain mistakes.
