NOTES ON MO'ESS CHITTINNOTES ON MO'ESS CHITTIM1) It has become traditional with the Montreal Jewish Community to raiseMo'ess Chittin for Passover Relief for war-stricken Jews in Europe. TheMo'ess Chittin is a sacred tradition and no Jew ever sat down to the Sederbefore having provided for the poor. The Jewish Canon Law considersMo'ess Chittin compulsory before the Festival of Passover. It is aholy obligation upon the Jews of this continent to provide Passover needsfor those who have suffered so much during 6 years of Nazi oppression.2) The responsibility for this year's Mo'ess Chittin is much greaterthan hitherto. This year the Jews in Europe are for the first time ableto observe Passover as free men and Jews. Relief can reach all Jewishsurvivors who depend on us that we shall provide their needs for Passover.3) The quota of this year's Mo'ess Chittin was set for $100,000.00 whichis double the amount of last year. The Central People's Relief Committeehas undertaken the obligation to raise this amount and has already arrangedthat supplies be shipped so that they arrive on time. The Passover program is being run jointly with the J.D.C. of theAmerican Jews and with the major relief organizations of British Jews,South-African Jews and Australian Jews. The program calls for 2,500,000pounds of Matzoths and other Passover supplies. The J.D.C. has alreadyallotted 1,000,000 as the initial allocation for this program. Themajor part of the Matzoths and supplies is now on route to Poland. Suppliesfor the amount of $20,000.00 have already been sent from Palestine to Russia.1,250,000 pounds of supplies have been purchased for the Jews in Belgium,Roumania, Turkey, France and Bulgaria. 400,000 pounds of matzohs have beenconsigned for the Jews in former concentration camps in Germany; they willbe distributed by representatives of the Canadian Jewish Congress who arenow doing relief work in these camps and by the representatives of theAmerican and British Jews in these camps. 50,000 litres of sacramental winehave been ordered from Jerusalem for the inmates of the camps and they arenow already in France for trans-shipment to German centres. Displaced Jewstheir way to Shanghai, China, Greece, Jugo-Slavia and Italy.4) The gigantic Passover program to which Montreal Jews have to contribute$100,000.00 calls for the utmost effort on the part of every organisation.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
