- Canadian Jewish CongressNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS:1121 ST. CATHERINE STREET WEST, MONTREAL — TELEPHONE PLATEAU 6891Central Region Office: 150 Beverly Street, TorontoWestern Region Office: 402 Confederation Life Building, WinnipegJune 1, 1943.Dear Sir:I wish to draw your attention to a department of Congress activities which, because of the very nature of its work, has had to forego the attention of the community which has been constantly faced with a series of emergency situations. This department is the Library and Archives department of the Congress.First, a word about the library. The nature of the work of our organization requires that we have constantly on hand the authoritative record and the pertinent facts in order that our representations be firmly founded and well orientated. Towards this end we have had to acquire the basic texts of books which are the background of the field of our activity. Thus, starting from a purely utilitarian viewpoint, we nevertheless find that we are the possessors of what is probably one of the best collections of materials on current Jewish life in this country. Our library is necessarily incomplete, for we have had to allot it the very slimmest budget and a minimum of attention, but it is nevertheless of great value and is being constantly used for purposes of reference. It is especially developed in such departments as post-war planning, Jewish education, anti-Semitism, programming, and social and economic research.A much older and much more complete collection, the Archives of Canadian Jewish history, is indeed a veritable treasure. There are few collections on the history of nation-wide Jewish community in the New World which can compete with our Archives. Obviously I cannot in the space of a letter enter into detailed description of the contents of this collection. I will content myself with a few points:There are a surprisingly large number of books in the collection, more than one would suppose to exist on the relatively small and new subject of Canadian Jewry. An interesting part of the collection is the section of works by Canadian Jewish authors.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
