TWENTY-TWO MONTHS OF CANADIAN JEWISH CONGRESS ACTIVITIESANTI-DEFAMATIONSOCIAL AND ECONOMIC RESEARCHARCHIVES COMMITTEEThe report of the twenty-two months activity of the Canadian Jewish Congress is the story of the work performed by seven active Standing Committees and three offices, in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, and their minutes alone would represent a few printed volumes. For the purpose of this report I will therefore review the actual sum total of activities.1. Have established a clipping bureau which is compiling information from one hundred daily newspapers and periodicals, classified and filed under 50 titles and 215 sub-titles, of which 92 files deal with Naziism in all its aspects; same provides daily the Anti-Defamation case work in Canada and also a wealth of statistical information which is consulted by students and research workers.2. Have organised a chain of 59 Anti-Defamation committees in 59 Canadian Jewish communities, in some cases jointly with the B'nai B'rith. We are in constant communication with these committees.3. Have handled successfully during the 22 months of our existence not less than 648 defamation cases, some of them of historic importance. (We only mention the Hyman Bill in Manitoba and the successful ending of the Tobias vs Neufeld and Whittaker Case in the King's Bench in Winnipeg.)4. Have established the National Mailing List, which though not complete as yet, already covers 50 communities, and lists some 30,000 names and addresses of representatives of public opinion in these communities.5. Have mailed to the above, or to specialised lists, or libraries, 72 mailings, about one million single copies, of pamphlets and mimeographed articles written by outstanding world leaders, dealing with tolerance, freedom and understanding, etc., all denouncing race hatred and Naziism. Some of this material has been reprinted by scores of leading newspapers, commented upon editorially and served as themes for many a pulpit.6. The Canadian Jewish Congress has thus centralised practically the entire Anti-Defamation work in Canada and has conducted it in a manner that its accomplishments exceed the greatest expectations, and clearly indicate how much more could be accomplished if only sufficient means are placed at our disposal. (Those interested in obtaining detailed information may call at 2040 Bloury Street, Room 15.)The duty of our Bureau of Jewish Social and Economic Research is to survey and collate all records and statistics affecting the economic, social, cultural, political judicial and educational life of Canadian Jews, for the double purpose:1. Furnishing exact data as a basis of our Anti-Defamation work.2. To supply exact information on the Jewish economic position in Canada. The work of the Social and Economic Research Bureau which should have cost a considerable amount of money, was accomplished through voluntary effort. What the Congress needs at present is the sum of approximately $2,000 to publish its findings.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
