- Scope & content
- Fonds consists of records created and maintained by Speight, Van Nostrand & Gibson Limited and predecessor firms relating to their surveying practice. The records consist of two large groupings, one of office reference materials, and the other of original office files of antecedents of the firm. The first grouping includes: several Goad's fire insurance atlases of the City of Toronto and area, 1884-1913; various historical atlases of Ontario counties, published by Walker and Miles, 1877-1879; a consolidation of lithographed broadsides promoting various land subdivisions in Toronto, dating from the mid to late 1880s; and five volumes constituting office consolidations of plans, dating ca. 1870-1910. The second grouping consists of the office files of various surveyors and surveying firms as businesses merged or were absorbed to evolve into Speight, Van Nostrand & Gibson Ltd: David Gibson, ca. 1830-1860; Peter S. Gibson, ca. 1860-1930; Speight & Van Nostrand Ltd, ca. 1880-1933; F.F. Passmore, ca. 1845-1890; and H.W. Tate, ca. 1910-1915. These files contain, in degrees varying from surveyor to surveyor, field notes, sketches, plans, legal instruments, advertising pamphlets and broadsides, product catalogs, correspondence and other textual records relating to their surveying activities.
