The website of Queen's University Archives is down (for about 8 hours)

Its images and links won't load until it's back. Panarchive shows each image straight from the archive's own website, so when that site is down the picture can't be shown here. Nothing is lost: everything returns once the archive is back up, and we check every few minutes.

Scope & content
Memorandum: referring to action of Ont Dept of Fish and Game in refusing to register traplines in the names of Indians, and stating that only way to get justice is to reopen question of whether treaty rights exist. Discussing appeals made on Robinson Huron Treaty. Also discussing promises made by Ont. Dept to Indians in speeches, newspaper articles, and correspondence, and outlining ways in which these were not kept. Also outlining the 'James Bay Treaty' [Treaty 9]. Giving opinion that even though Ont. Game Act is to apply and therefore Ont "has the authority to prohibit Indians trapping or hunting on tracts of land required for other purposes", Ontario would not be authorized "to prohibit Indians hunting on Crown lands as long as they observe the close seasons, quotas etc., of the Ontario Game Act" Further indicating that Ont. Gov't is supposed to allocate leases for traplines to individuals under basis of right of prior occupation, but that Whites are conferred leases when Indians are disqualified, ev en though Indians have title that "predates the discovery of the continent" Stating that Dept. "should take the case in hand and supervise the application of individual Indians for registered traplines." Outlining further measures which could be undertaken to prove that Ont. not giving Indians a fair chance. (Marginalia]
