Scope & content
Report: giving report on area of Reserve under headings of topography, history, mining, power development, lumbering, Mont Laurier Highway Park, organization, poaching, fur production (including charts), native co-operation, liquor, recommendations, and conclusion. Stating that "[T]his territory was set aside as soon as white penetration reached the area and before any depletion resulted so it was not necessary to close the season to build up the fur population. The result has been that, adhering to their traditional trapping customs, the Indians have conserved their assets and the sustained yield of this tract is second to none in the Province." Also referring to development of a power plant on the Ottawa River in Laudenet Township, near the northwest comer of the Reserve, for mining industry. Also indicating that lumbering operations started out on flooded timber but ''have since been extended up the Ottawa River until they have almost reached Granet Lake", and that these activities have detrimentally affected beaver populations. Outlining Native rights in Mont Laurier Highway Reserve- that they could trap fur-bearing animals and fish but not hunt big game. Also reporting that native population adversely affected by excellent fur production record of area. Recommends asking for lease of area and/or extension of boundaries of preserve.
