Scope & content
Letter: re his letter of September 28th regarding certificates of Indian status of trappers. Submits 20 names of those Indians of the Golden Lake Reserve who wish certificates of status. Advises that these certificates do not prevent the Game Wardens from taking guns and traps from the Indians. States that [name of Golden Lake Band member] was caught at Round Lake a few days ago and had his gun and traps taken from him. Agent states that he knows these certificates are not permits but the Wardens are not giving the Indians a chance at all even when they do have them. Agent advises that a gun permit is $1; trapping licence is $5 and a deer licence is $1. He advises the Secretary that these certificates of status give the Indians a false sense of their rights and they end up getting caught and having their belongings confiscated. He adds that the only place where the certificates help is over on the Quebec side where the Game Wardens sometimes let them go when they produce their certificate.
