- Scope & content
- Copy of letter: stating that Quebec Dept of Game and Fish has recently set aside the trapping rights of almost the entire unsettled area of the province for the sole benefit of Indians and Eskimos. Also indicating that, having observed the various game laws throughout Canada over a long period, the laws are doing almost nothing toward conservation of fur resources. Also writing that game laws broken every day by illegal trapping, to the detriment of gov't and legitimate trappers and traders. Further discussing natural tendency of Indians to conservation. Also indicating degree to which Indians depend upon wildlife, and consequences on Native way of life of depletion of game by whites. Asking for protection of Indians, and to confine right of hunting and trapping fur-bearing animals in unsettled areas to Indians in all provinces, as Quebec has done. Also asking that level of royalties levied by provinces on furs be reduced, as market prices have been declining for the past year.
