Scope & content
Letter: advising that a council was held at Three Rivers on the 26th re the subject of the difficulties in claims to hunting grounds. States that the Hurons of Lorette, Algonquins of Three Rivers and the Abenakis Chiefs of Becancour and St Francis were present. Advises that from the investigation it appears that the Algonquins were correct about their statement that the lands on the north of the St. Lawrence were theirs and the Abenakis had the south side. Scates that the situation is difficult as there are few lands left to hunt for the Abenakis on the south side but they have land and seigniorial rents but the Algonquins have no other recourse but hunting. States that the Algonquin Chief wishes to have the decision of right decided by a council of Six Nations or by His Excellency but the Abenakis wish it decided by His Excellency alone. Advises that the difficulties between the Hurons of Lorette and the Algonquins of Three Rivers have been taken care of by written arrangement which he encloses.
