- Scope & content
- Letter: advising that he has examined the reports of Napier and de Niverville, and it seems that wampum beads are the only proof the Indians have to their claims to hunting grounds. Refers to de Niverville's report that for the past 25 or 30 years the Algonquins have hired the Abenakis to hunt with them in their territories and that the Abenakis have taken advantage of the knowledge of the land that they have gained to hunt for themselves on these lands. States that the proclamation of 1763 gives generally to the Indians the liberty of hunting on the ungranted lands but there appears to be no docwnent for any distribution of hunting lands exclusively to any Tribe.
