- Scope & content
- Report: comprehensive report on the state of the Indian Department in Lower Canada, enumerating different tribes of Indians at various locations for the years 1834 and 1836. Identifies 355 Algonquins and 250 Nipissings and 282 Iroquois at Lake of Two Mountains. Of the Algonquins and Abenaquais of Three Rivers, St. Francis and Becancour, he advises that they had been in possession of considerable landed property of which they have been cruelly deprived and pleads that the government protect them. Advises that the Algonquin and Abenaquais were of great service in the last war. States that they are completely dependent on the hunt and the lands granted them by the government in 1763 on the banks of the Ottawa River are rapidly becoming settled. Advises that they are being forced to hunt on lands belonging to other tribes.
