Scope & content
Record of Council: the previous year Chevalier de Callieres made peace with Iroquois for himself and his Indian allies. Only Hurons and Ottawas were present at that time. Therefore he dispatched Mr. de Courtemanche and Reverend Father Anlatran to other nations of allies to request them to send representative chiefs, with their Iroquois prisoners, to attend council. Ratifying peace made in August of 1700. Prisoners are exchanged, wampum belts and calumets (pipes) also. Several chiefs speak. among them: 'The Nipissings: I did not want to miss coming here like the others to hear your voice; I had one Iroquois prisoner last year which I gave to you, here is a calumet which I give you to give it to the Iroquois if you wish so that we may smoke together when we meet" 'The Algonquins:I have no prisoners to give to you my father. The Algonquin is one of your children that has always been yours, and feeling that He will see, I pray the Master of Life that what you are doing today will endure." Numerous totems on last page including "marque des missisagues" "marque des algonkins." The original document is in French, an English transcript is attached along with written notes explaining some of the diplomatic language, and protocols, and identity of participants.
