Scope & content
Accompanying caption (labelling and description) for an internationally distributed press photograph of Vidkun Quisling (1887–1945), Norwegian leader of the fascist party Nasjonal Samling before and during the Second World War, and a collaborator with the German Nazi occupation regime in Norway. The retouched photograph shows Quisling about to address volunteers of the Norwegian Legion (Waffen-SS) at Fallingbostel on 3 October 1941. Fallingbostel served as a major Waffen-SS training camp, where members of the Norwegian Legion (Norwegian: Den norske legion, German: 'SS-Freiwilligen-Legion Norwegen), established in 1941, underwent infantry training and swore their oath of allegiance in October 1941. Copied from the collections of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec; Archives nationales à Montréal, Fonds La Presse (Collections et fonds: Fonds La Presse; Location: Archives nationales à Montréal), where the image is marked “Domaine public au Canada.”
