- Page one of The Sweating System in This Province as viewed by The Jewish Times. February, 4, 1898. Written as the speed of Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe to Montreal was accelerating. As working conditions had been deteriorating for some years in Montreal, the sweating system was beginning to catch the eye of the government and community leaders. The Jewish Times was published by Lyon Cohen and S. W. Jacobs, who were part of the established and wealthier uptown Jewish community. The Times was faced with the awkward discussion of addressing working conditions while some fellow uptowners may have been guilty of treating workers poorly. Courtesy of JPL-A.
