- Interpretation panel at 3859-3863, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal / The Main, Forever in Tune – Sherbrooke/Mont-Royal » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2010. On y trouve The Brand Farmer New Laid Egg Company, National Hardware, Victor’s Dry Goods, State Dairy, Milton’s Herring Store, Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen et Ontario Outfitters. The Warshaw Building , located between Roy and Napoléon Streets, occupies several former lots on Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Saint-Dominique Street . From the 1880s until the 1960s, the five buildings on the Main housed a succession of small shops catering to the local community. Operated by French-Canadian and Jewish merchants, many of whom lived above their stores, they included The Brand Farmer New Laid Egg Company, National Hardware, Victor’s Dry Goods, State Dairy, Milton’s Herring Store, Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen and Ontario Outfitters. Perhaps the most memorable shop in the ensemble was Warshaw’s Bargain Fruit Market at 3863 Saint-Laurent, called Saint Lawrence Bargain Fruit Market when it opened in 1935, at 3859 Saint-Laurent. In 1958, its owner, Laja (Leah) Florkevitch, better known as “Mrs. Warshaw”, expanded her business, now a grocery store, into the neighbouring lot . Her daughter, Helen Levy, subsequently purchased adjacent properties and in 1964 replaced the existing edifices by a large building with underground parking and an upstairs warehouse . Warshaw Food Market offered not only food at great prices, but household goods and plants. In 2002, the Levy family closed its store on the Main. The Warshaw Building, managed by Harvey Levy, underwent renovations and has since housed Pharmaprix at street level and offices, studios and fitness and yoga centres upstairs.
